Coordinator for Bird Safety

APPLY

Join Our Team as the Coordinator for Bird Safety at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology!

If you're eager to make an impact and be part of a dynamic team working to protect birds, then we invite you to explore this exciting opportunity with us!

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell University embraces diversity and seeks candidates who will contribute to a climate that supports students, faculty, and staff of all identities and backgrounds. We strongly encourage individuals from underrepresented and/or marginalized identities to apply.

About The Department

The Cornell Lab of Ornithology is dedicated to advancing the understanding and protection of the natural world and joins with people from all walks of life to make new scientific discoveries, share insights, and galvanize conservation action.

The Lab’s Center for Engagement in Science and Nature (CESN) activates and supports people worldwide to connect with birds and nature, participate in science, and promote the wellbeing of humans and natural systems. Recognizing that one of our significant strengths is the collective power of the people we engage, we work across disciplines to design opportunities that inspire people to contribute to science and become advocates for life on earth.

Our model for change is to bring curiosity to scale through education and participatory science so that together we can gain insight into how natural systems work and address global conservation challenges.

The Lab is dedicated to addressing declining bird populations, including bird-window strikes that are estimated to kill up to a billion across the United States each year. We work collaboratively with a diverse network of partners to implement effective strategies that mitigate bird collisions with windows and promote awareness about the importance of bird conservation.

We seek to combine the Lab’s unprecedented data resources on bird populations with a growing expertise in social science to effect change.

About the Opportunity

We are hiring a “Bird Safe” project coordinator to collaborate on the development, testing, and implementation of public engagement campaigns to reduce bird mortality caused by collisions with glass.

The Bird Safe coordinator will be part of the Lab’s Center for Engagement in Science and Nature and will work with an interdisciplinary team at the Lab and with external partners to develop initiatives that engage individuals and communities in taking action to reduce window collisions by making glass safer for birds and turning out nonessential lights during spring and fall migration.
The coordinator will work with nonprofit, government, and business partners to understand partner needs and facilitate the consolidation, packaging, and delivery of messaging, best practices, and tools to help support and coordinate partner efforts.

Collaborate to set goals, align stakeholders on priorities, define scope, assign tasks, and manage production and delivery of campaign materials, coordinating individual and group activities to meet project deadlines.

Track, summarize, and report on results to facilitate improvements in future iterations.

Outreach and Engagement: Collaborate with the Lab’s Bird Friendly core team and external partners to use social science research insights in the design and testing of messaging and calls to action for public audiences. Participate in the design and coordination of outreach campaigns that inspire and support people to make glass safer for birds and turn out nonessential lights during spring and fall migration.

Partnership Development and Coordination: Develop and maintain relationships with other programs and coordinators to expand collective efforts across states and cities. Facilitate information-sharing among partners and the consolidation and dissemination of best practices, resources, and training for working with key audiences such as city and state governments, building managers, local conservation and outreach organizations, media, businesses, and homeowners.
