We are seeking a dynamic, hybrid Bioinformatics and Software Development professional to extend the utility of our existing microbiomics database and data science platform. In this role, you will work on integrating a wide range of microbiomics applications—beyond human shotgun sequencing—to include animal 16S data, antimicrobial resistance data in both humans and animals, wastewater microbiomics surveillance, and other high-impact microbiomics applications. This is an exciting opportunity to drive innovation in microbiome research and expand our platform’s capabilities to address diverse scientific challenges.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Design, develop, and implement software modules and data pipelines to incorporate various microbiomics datasets into the Orion platform.
- Integrate and optimize workflows for animal 16S data, antimicrobial resistance data, wastewater surveillance, and other specialized microbiomics applications.
- Collaborate with bioinformaticians and data scientists to adapt existing pipelines and develop new ones that support diverse data types.
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues in data processing, pipeline execution, and integration across multiple microbiomics datasets.
- Develop and optimize backend services.
- Manage and maintain relational (SQL) and non-relational (NoSQL) databases.
- Implement APIs for data integration and access.
- Enhance data pipelines and storage efficiency.
- Collaborate with cross-functional software development teams to improve platform and database performance.
- Participate in code reviews, testing, and debugging to maintain high-quality standards.
- Document code, methodologies, and workflows to ensure reproducibility and facilitate future enhancements.
- Evaluate emerging tools and technologies to keep the platform at the forefront of microbiome research innovation.
Preferred Skills and Qualifications:
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python and/or R, with robust experience in software development and bioinformatics pipeline creation.
- Experience with containerization technologies (e.g., Docker) and cloud computing platforms (e.g., AWS, GCP, or Azure) for scalable pipeline deployment.
- Familiarity with modern bioinformatics tools and workflows (e.g., QIIME, DADA2, Mothur) for 16S analysis and related applications.
- Knowledge of database management systems (both relational and non-relational) to support complex data integration.
- Prior exposure to microbiomics research or large-scale data science platforms is highly desirable.
- Demonstrated expertise in developing and integrating computational pipelines for processing diverse microbiomics data types.
- Experience with Linux/Unix operating systems, command line tools, and version control systems (e.g., git/GitHub).
- Solid understanding of various microbiomics data, including human shotgun sequencing, animal 16S, antimicrobial resistance, and wastewater surveillance data.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with meticulous attention to detail.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, or a related field, with coursework or project experience in microbiome analysis.
- Demonstrated hands-on experience through internships, research projects, or industry roles focused on bioinformatics software development.
- A strong academic or professional background in developing and implementing computational pipelines for biological data is highly desirable.
