About the Location:

Hybrid Position:

This position may be considered Hybrid based on PetSmart’s FlexSmart policy and business needs. A Hybrid work arrangement is considered to be a blend of onsite and remote work activity. Associates with a Hybrid work arrangement have a work space at Phoenix Home Office and can be required to come onsite between 1-5 days a week as determined by leadership and based on business needs.

SUMMARY

This is a senior-level position in the Enterprise Systems Engineering and Operations group within PetSmart’s Service Delivery department. The role focuses on the operational support, administration, and optimization of PetSmart’s enterprise Linux and UNIX infrastructure, ensuring stability, performance, and security.

Additionally, the role plays a major part in compute, virtualization, and storage environments but is primarily dedicated to Linux/UNIX system engineering, automation, and troubleshooting.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Minimum 7-10 years of hands-on experience in a Senior Linux/UNIX Systems Engineer role.
  • Deploy, configure, and administer Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and other UNIX-based systems in an enterprise environment.
  • Automate system administration tasks using scripting languages like Bash, Python, or Ansible.
  • Implement security best practices, including system hardening, patch management, and access controls for Linux/UNIX environments.
  • Perform fault isolation, service recovery, root cause analysis, and long-term stability improvements for Linux/UNIX systems.
  • Capacity and performance planning, software upgrades, system migrations, and infrastructure buildouts.
  • Administration and optimization of enterprise data centers, cloud platforms, and on-premises systems.
  • Executing routine changes, provisioning services, and deployments during business and non-business hours.
  • Development of standards, procedures, and documentation.
  • Vendor engagement and relationship management.
  • Provide technical direction and mentorship for other engineers.
  • Participate in a 24x7 on-call rotation.

TECHNICAL EXECUTION:

  • Expertise in Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), including installation, configuration, and performance tuning.
  • Manage and optimize system automation using Ansible, Puppet, or Chef.
  • Ensure enterprise-grade security compliance, including SELinux policies, audit logging, and vulnerability management.
  • Implement and manage high-availability clustering solutions for Linux-based workloads.
  • Troubleshoot complex Linux/UNIX system issues, providing root cause analysis and implementing preventive measures.
  • Manage storage provisioning, replication, and optimization for high availability and data protection.
  • Maintain and support enterprise virtualization platforms such as VMware vSphere, KVM, or Microsoft Hyper-V.
  • Administer and maintain Cisco UCS compute platforms to support Linux/UNIX workloads.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
  • A bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field is preferred.
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in enterprise-level system engineering roles.
  • Extensive experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and Unix-based systems.
  • Proven track record in virtualization technologies such as VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, or KVM.
  • Hands-on expertise with enterprise storage solutions, including SAN, NAS, and object storage.
  • Strong understanding of Cisco UCS compute platforms and their integration with enterprise infrastructure.
