Under general supervision of the Clinic Manager and Physician, the Licensed Vocational Nurse provides direct nursing care to clinic patients; performs approved nursing procedures. Assists in planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care.
Serves as a patient advocate within the health care system. Responsible for assisting with the safety, comfort, care, and treatment of patients according to established standards. Participates in the Clinic’s Quality Improvement and Service Excellence programs.

Demonstrates understanding of the organization’s philosophy and objectives, and adheres to policy and procedures of the department and organization.
- Utilizes the nursing process to plan, provide, document and evaluate care.
- Performs data collection to assist in patient assessment.
- Coordinates and plans delivery of nursing care with a multidisciplinary team and administers appropriate clinical decisions in the delivery of patient care. Collaborates with the entire healthcare team to develop a plan of care that prescribes interventions to attain expected outcomes.
- Delivers appropriate care to patients, at a competent level, according to the needs of the patient and population served.
- Administers medications (orally, topically, IM and SQ); assists with compliance and oversight for the Texas Free Vaccines for Children program; documents all medications (including samples and DME) in the HIS database in full compliance with The Joint Commission regulations for medication administration.
- Performs dressing changes, obtain blood specimens (venipuncture and capillary puncture), Obtains basic screenings (dipstick urine, rapid flu and strep testing, bedside glucose testing, occult blood, qualitative pregnancy, tape test pinworms, PKUs for newborns, lead testing for pediatric patients, etc.). Trained and certified to perform DOT and non DOT drug screens and breathe alcohol testing.
- Necessitates referrals as needed to other physicians or facilities.
- Assumes responsibility for contacting pharmacies for new prescriptions and /or refills.
- Maintains lab equipment and supplies: reorders supplies as needed.
- Sets up lab equipment and supplies upon arrival to work in preparation of daily patient load.
- Documents patient care. Maintains medical records and nursing reports. Transcribes physician orders.
- Evaluates the patient’s progress toward attainment of outcomes. Effectively communicates with physicians and other team members.
- Provides patient/family teaching based on the needs of each patient and plans ways to meet those needs.
- Adheres to infection prevention protocols.
- Demonstrates an understanding of patient rights, including those pertaining to confidentiality, informed consent and privacy.
- Demonstrates adaptability, problem solving and professional behavior at all times.
- Participates in a systemic, interdisciplinary, and ongoing evaluation of programs, process improvement, and desired client-centered outcomes.
- Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education, competence validation; supports department-based goals which contributed to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor and resource to less experienced staff.
- Actively participates in survey readiness activities and assures that department is compliant with all regulatory standards.
- Abides by the HMH Legal Compliance Code of Conduct.
- Maintains patient confidentiality and appropriate handling of PHI.
- Maintains a safe work environment and reports safety concerns appropriately.
- Performs all other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
Education: Graduate of a school of vocational nursing required.Experience: None required. Three years of nursing experience preferred.
License/Certification: Current Texas licensure as a Vocational Nurse required. Basic Life Support certification required within 30 days of employment, before patient care is administered independently.
