As a Substation Design Engineer, you will work alongside Protection & Control Engineers to design physical substation layouts utilizing applicable codes and client standards. Typical designs to include general arrangement, equipment and electrical layout, elevation views, cable trench, grounding, conduit drawings, details, and AC and DC power systems.
The 2025 Engineering Boot Camp, powered by Qualus University, will be starting on July 7, 2025. As a program participant, you will receive an offer to be a full-time employee with Qualus.

Responsibilities:
- Coordinate with Substation Design Engineers, Relay Settings Engineers, and other groups to ensure design concurrence.
- Design Substations utilizing applicable codes and client standards. Typical design to include general arrangements, equipment and electrical layout, elevation views, cable trench, grounding studies, conduit drawings, grounding grids, lightning protection and grounding plans, AC/DC power systems, and bill of materials.
- Complete calculations such as AC/DC load, bus spans, and ampacity.
- Create equipment and material specifications for procurement of engineered equipment as well as development of design scope and cost estimates.
- Working on project teams supporting all quality and project management goals.
- Meeting all project deadlines and supporting the processes and procedures to meet deadlines.
- Maintaining up-to-date technical skills related to the design of electrical substations and protection and control schematics for the electric utility power grid through on-the-job work and formal training.
- Substation awareness and Safety consciousness.
- Aptitude to quickly learn and apply test procedures for various types of substation equipment.
- Good PC skills and the ability to support testing activities as required by the project lead.
- Develop drawings and assist in the preparation of design packages using CAD/drafting skills.
- Preparing additional support documentation as needed to assist procurement, construction, and operation/maintenance of systems being designed.
- Consistently following established design standards and CAD drafting standards while assuring quality, accuracy, and completeness.
- Identifying process improvement ideas and commuting ideas through appropriate management channels.
Qualifications:
- BS Degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited school (Mechanical Engineering degrees accepted for some roles) with a focus on power systems.
- Ability to travel up to 20% of the time.
- Microsoft Office product application.
- Knowledge of AutoCAD and/or MicroStation.
- Educational experience directly related to working with [medium to high voltage] electricity (preferred).
- Must have the ability to work independently, and accurately, and have high attention to detail.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to effectively discuss technical recommendations with customers.
- Strong computer skills.
