This Opportunity
Our Earth and Environment Team is seeking an Early Career GIS Analyst to work out of our Herndon, VA office to perform flood risk analysis, mapping, and related services on FEMA projects throughout the Mid-Atlantic, Midwest, and Northeast U.S. regions. The position will report to our office in Herndon, VA.WSP is promoting a hybrid work model and staff are expected to work 3 days/week in the office.
Takes part in providing local technical assistance for capturing, modeling, and analyzing geographical and tabular data to illustrate and determine spatial relationships as it pertains to client projects. Assignments may include supporting technical staff with spatial mapping, discovering patterns and trends, and developing mapping applications and tools at the intersection of data analysis, programming, and cartography.Generates accurate and concise documentation, ensuring that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards.
Your Impact
- Perform GIS database development, qualitative/quantitative analysis, and mapping as a member of a local and regional water resources team (primarily flood risk analysis and mapping)
- Compile, manipulate, and refine geographic data from a variety of sources including hydraulic models, field collection, satellite/aerial imagery, public domain data, and existing maps
- Produce detailed, high-quality cartographic products (digital and hardcopy) and accompanying reports in accordance with technical guidelines and client needs
- Perform regular quality control checks of spatial and non-spatial datasets to ensure data integrity
- Collaborate with team members on project tasks related to GIS, database design and management, and data visualization
- Customize GIS workflow and software programs for data collection, engineering, and environmental applications
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Geographic Information Systems, Geography, or closely related discipline.
- 0 to 1 years of relevant post education experience.
- Proficiency using ESRI Arc GIS software.
- Proficiency using Microsoft Office.
- Experience in producing high-quality digital and hardcopy maps and project graphics.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficient self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
- Ability to work independently under general supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
- Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, spreadsheets, technology, and tools.
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
- Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
- Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with FEMA’s Risk MAP and National Flood Insurance Program.
- Experience with hazard mitigation.
- Customization of GIS software using Python.
- Experience with AGOL, data visualization, and raster manipulation.
