Overview:

Ave Maria Press is seeking an Associate Editor to lead production efforts and acquire new titles for our line of Catholic books. While this is a full-time, in-person role located at Ave's headquarters at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, our editorial team currently operates on a hybrid schedule with the ability to work remotely for up to two days per week.

Responsibilities and Qualifications:

The Associate Editor contributes to a full range of editorial tasks in publishing, from discovering new authors to proofreading. This role will be expected to acquire and edit several new titles each year. We are seeking an editor who can offer a critical, creative voice to our acquisition review process.

This position also manages production editing for projects in Ave's seasonal lineup, partnering with other editors and authors to help move a project from copyediting to printing.

Responsibilities include: Acquire four titles per year and provide developmental and line editing for these projects.

Collaborate with other editors to edit and manage production tasks such as copyediting and proofreading for new books.
Prepare manuscript files for production.
Draft marketing copy and initiate title and cover decisions.
Proofread copy and content such as forewords and introductions.
Manage freelancers and assist in the hiring, training, and supervision of interns.

Maintain essential databases.

Essential qualifications:
Practicing Catholic who is participating in the life of the Church at the parish level and has a working knowledge of the pastoral realities and challenges facing the Catholic Church.
Bachelor's degree in theology, English, communications, publishing, or equivalent field of study.
Expert fluency in the Chicago Manual of Style.
Familiarity with writing and editing functions in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and Adobe applications.
Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
The ability to manage many projects simultaneously, meet deadlines, follow up proactively, take initiative, and solve problems creatively.

A collaborative spirit is essential-this role requires strong communication skills that convey transparency and trustworthiness to internal and external stakeholders

Preferred qualifications: College-level study of theology.

Minimum of three years of editorial experience in the book publishing industry.

Skills needed for this role:
A wide range of editing skills proven in a professional context, from developmental and line editing to copyediting and proofreading.
Excellent professional skills, such as timeliness, attention to detail, multi-tasking, prioritization among competing responsibilities, and maintaining a schedule and meeting deadlines.
Diplomacy with authors during the editorial process, contract negotiations, and solicitation of endorsements.
The ability to work with a high degree of accuracy; a critical eye for both stylistic and theological nuance.

The capacity to work well alone and in teams: a growth mindset and a drive to initiate projects independently, along with strong interpersonal skills that will contribute to our collaborative team culture.

Position Details:

This is a full-time, salaried position. The expected work hours are approximately 37.5 hours per week, between the business hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. (EST), Monday through Friday. The exact schedule will be discussed and decided upon during the interview and offer stage.
