The Interventional Radiology Technologist, under the direction of the Director of Diagnostic Imaging Services and Imaging Department site manager, will perform technical duties within the Diagnostic Imaging Special Procedures environment. The incumbent is directly involved with a variety of special procedures which apply ionizing radiation and other forms of energy.May perform additional assignments as necessary.
Responsibilities:
A day in the life of an Interventional Radiology Technologist at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:
- Technical Competency: Properly operates all ancillary equipment. Positions patients, sets up and operates imaging equipment maintaining quality throughout all steps and phases of the examination. Provides coverage and support for his/her team to maintain service level agreements. Maintains technical proficiency in the use of all equipment in the department. Has a full working knowledge of the AW workstation. Ensure proper documentation of diagnosis, procedure history and any post procedure findings to the Radiologists.
- Patient Safety: Ensures that all criteria for scheduling and performing tests are met such as: blood work, safety checklist, ALARA, medication administration prior to and during testing. Reviews charts and other documents to confirm physician orders for accuracy and appropriateness. Demonstrates familiarity with the use of all immobilization devices and exercises good judgement with application and, if necessary, gets advice and assistance as needed. Assists in obtaining patient informed consent (when appropriate) prior to performing or assisting physicians in administration of contrast media. Consults with Department (or) unit nurse regarding patient's condition or advice for other patient care by Imaging Department Consults with radiologist when clarification or direction is needed regarding patient's condition or when there are questions about the protocol or specific study that is to be performed. Performs examinations in Interventional Radiology as described by standard operating procedures manual as well as utilizing appropriate marking devices.
- Communication: Introduces themselves, explains procedure to patient to decrease anxiety and increase patient cooperation in a confident and personable manner and allows time for any questions the patient may have. Communicates with physician offices, patient nursing units and ordering physicians to facilitate scheduling and/or completion of exams in a professional manner consistent with the organizational values. Knowledge of Cyraphone for proper communication. Assumes leadership responsibility in absence of supervisor but contacts a Team Leader/Administrator for their advice when unusual problems or circumstances occur.
- Documentation: Utilizes and documents in the RIS (Clinstar), entering all fields and completing exam, correct physicians name and patient account. Verify exams in PACS after completing proper documentation as per PACS protocol.
- Policies and Procedures: Complies with hospital, local, state, and federal regulatory and accrediting standards as well as department specific protocols and policies.
- Quality Improvement: Participates in the evaluation of individual studies to improve patient outcomes and operational efficiencies. Participates in continuing education and completes required E-Learning as assigned and maintains necessary Continuing Education Units (CEUS).
- Other Duties: Checks inventory and replenishes supplies as needed. Performs duties as assigned by department manager and/or director such as collecting data for process improvement. Participates in the orientation and training of new employees and students.
- Multi-Modality: Technologist is proficient in Cat Scan / X-Ray Vascular / Ultrasound / Nuclear Medicine / Interventional and MRI modalities.
- Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
- Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.
Qualifications:
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:- Graduate of an AMA approved school of radiologic technology.
- Proficient in all areas of special procedures.
- Performs at a technical level not requiring constant supervision.
- Two years radiologic technology experience preferred.
- A.A.S. degree in radiologic technology preferred.
- Diagnostic Radiography License.
- American Registry of Radiologic Technologists Certification.
- AHA Basic Health Care Life Support HCP Certification.
- VI Certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) within 1 year of hire.
