Boys & Girls Clubs of the Peninsula (BGCP) proudly stands as the largest expanded learning provider in San Mateo County, dedicated to empowering 5,400 TK-College students across 29 sites from East Palo Alto to Daly City. POSITION OVERVIEW
The Athletics Assistant is responsible for supporting the delivery of a broad range of Athletic activities within the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Peninsula as well as at our partner schools and school districts. You will help plan, develop, and oversee implementation of sports programming and sports leagues.You will also be responsible for developing and maintaining strong and productive relationships with partner organizations and schools in order to expand our impact and reach.
ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Prepare Youth for Success:
- Help plan and oversee the administration of the San Mateo Athletic program and activities
- Plan, develop and implement recreational sports activities in San Mateo Schools to engage youth in healthy physical fitness activities and to develop long term fitness habits
- Develop youth understanding and practice of good sportsmanship and teamwork through competition and direct instruction
- Help run San Mateo School site leagues
Development Framework:
- Contribute to the Barry Carr Sports Leagues objectives consistent with organizational goals and mission.
- Oversee the provision of the day-to-day Athletic program activities in accordance with established standards and goals in partnership with the Athletics team.
- Ensure that members are encouraged to participate in a variety of program activities and receive instruction and constructive feedback to develop sportsmanship, teamwork and skills in Athletics.
- Demonstrate leadership to assure good conduct, safety, and development of members
- Help youth discover their passions and steer them into structured programs.
Program Development and Implementation:
- Maintain Barry Carr Sports Leagues Athletic goals in settings that insure the health and safety of the members.
- Help to ensure that the site staff understand and effectively communicate standards of the program; that they ensure program and playing areas are safe.
- Support the planning and execution of the physical education enrichments classes and team practices as needed.
- Identify, select, and modify instructional resources to meet the needs of the students with varying backgrounds, learning styles, and special needs
- Ensure the evaluation of Athletic programs on a continual basis in partnership with the Athletics team.
- Ensure the Physical Education and Athletic programs respond to member needs and address their gender and cultural diversity.
- Determines, measures, evaluates and reports performance metrics.
- Analyzes similar after-school youth programs in partnership with the Athletics
Supervision:
- Allocate and monitor work assigned to program volunteers, staff, and coaches providing ongoing feedback and regular appraisal.
- Identify and support training and development opportunities for assigned volunteers, staff and coaches.
- Partner with the Athletics Department on proper record keeping and reporting including activities and events conducted.
- Ensure productive and effective performance by all teens and volunteers.
Marketing and Public Relations:
- Increase visibility of San Mateo Athletic programs via posting of daily schedule, announcements on upcoming events and the dissemination of timely information for the development of advertising and promotion through mailings, fliers, and media releases
- Establish community and school partnerships where appropriate
Additional Responsibilities:
- Coaching, officiating, and otherwise facilitating athletic leagues, specifically Basketball and Volleyball
- Teaching the elements of ROOTS: Respect for the Rules, Opponents, Officials, Teammates, and Self.
- Modeling and teaching participants to Honor the Game through fair play and sportsmanship
- Developing and structuring sports leagues: evaluating players, creating balanced teams, league rules and schedules.
- Assist special programs and/or events (i.e. Awards Programs), and/or participate in other Athletic activities as necessary.
- Drive the Club van periodically.
- Consult with parents concerning member and club issues.
- Maintain close daily contact with school staff, Club staff (professional and volunteer), Club members, and receive/provide information, discuss issues, explain or interpret guidelines/instructions; instruct, and counsel.
- Maintain contact as needed with external groups, schools, donors, and member’s parents and others to assist in resolving problems.
- Perform additional relevant duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent
- Working towards degree program in relevant field that includes but not limited to Sports Management, Youth Program Development, Kinesiology
- Passion for working with youth
- Spanish speaking strongly preferred
- Prior coaching and officiating experience
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
- Group leadership skills, including an understanding of group dynamics
- Demonstrated organizational, staff, and project management abilities
- CPR and First Aid Certifications recommended (if not, to be completed within 90 days of start date)
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; some stooping, kneeling, bending at the waist, reaching overhead, crouching, squating, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity.Generally the job requires 20% sitting, 80% walking & standing. Work environment noise level is usually moderate but can be noisy at times. All requirements are subject to reasonable accommodations.
LOCATION
San Mateo School Sites
WORK SCHEDULE- Academic Year: Monday – Friday 2:30 PM – 6:30 PM, Wednesdays 1:00-6:30 PM, and Saturdays 8:30 AM -2:30 PM.
- Saturday work required
- Employment Status: Part Time, Non-Exempt
- Pay Range: $24.00-$27.00 per hour, depending on experience (DOE)
