THE POSITION
Under the supervision of the Rapid Results Program Manager and the Director of Nursing and Clinical Operations (for all clinical duties), the Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) will play a vital role in Men’s Health Foundation’s mission to arrest the spread of HIV/STDs in the community through their work in our express testing clinics.In these fast-paced and dynamic environments, the LVN will work daily with MHF’s committed staff to provide our diverse patients access to HIV/STD testing, treatment, and health education. The LVN will provide compassionate, informed, and patient-centered counseling to clients including safer sex education, education about test results, and referrals to care.
The LVN must be able to maintain both strong professional boundaries and a compassionate, sex-positive approach to clients. At MHF our goal is to educate clients so that they can make the best choices for their own lives.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES (This list may not include all the duties assigned.)- Administer medications to patients and provide patient education regarding medications, diagnosis, and prevention with specific regards to STDs
- Observe patients for any medication side effects or reactions, and document and report to Medical Provider
- Follow-up on treatment and adherence activities
- When applicable, the LVN will work with the provider to ensure partner delivered patient therapy (PDPT) is distributed to patients testing for gonorrhea and chlamydia
- Educate patients receiving HIV/STD testing about safer sex practices, including PrEP, PEP, condoms, and harm reduction approaches
- Disclose HIV/STD results and provide client-centered health education to patients who test positive for HIV or STDs about treatment options and supportive programming offered by MHF or other community organizations
- Document all clients with STDs who miss their treatment appointment; maintain a call record and contact the client to reschedule appointment
- Provide patient referrals and books follow-up appointments when necessary
- Consult with physicians and other clinicians to obtain medical information, provide appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations, and stimulate rapid and thorough reporting practices
- Implement enhanced surveillance activities, including administration of standardized questionnaires and medical record abstraction
- Accurately enter client information into Allscripts, Men’s Health Foundation’s Electronic Health Record, and Los Angeles County’s data tracing system
- Work with clinic staff to be sure infections are reported accurately and timely to DHSP
- Assist in data auditing tasks, prepare reports as required
- Collaborate directly with Los Angeles County Department of HIV/STD Programs and clinical providers to serve clients infected with syphilis, HIV, and other STDs
- Enhance practice reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments
- Other duties as assigned
- California LVN license in good standing
- 2-4 years of public health education or related field experience preferred
- HIV counseling and testing experience or phlebotomy certification a plus
- Working knowledge and/or experience working in public health or related field, including understanding of STDs, HIV preferred
- Strong communication skills; works well in a team with a wide variety of people
- Strong computer skills and ability to input data
- Good organizational skills and ability to work independently in a fast-paced, diverse environment
- Understanding of HIPAA and the ability to maintain confidentiality at all times
- Possess critical thinking ability and problem-solving skills
- Bilingual (English/Spanish fluency) skills, preferred
- Must take yearly flu vaccination or follow appropriate infection control measures during flu season and test for tuberculosis as required by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
- Must consent to organization-wide testing for COVID-19 and adhere to all infection control measures to reduce the spread of COVID 19
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with people of diverse races, ethnicities, nationalities, sexual orientations, gender identities, socio-economic backgrounds, religions, ages, English-speaking abilities, immigration statues, and physical abilities in a multicultural environment
- Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test and background check to include a 7-year criminal, 10-year SSN & employer history reference check.

Compensation details: 30-37 Hourly Wage
