Job Description: Community Involvement Coordinator

Covenant House California (CHC) is excited to be entering the fourth year of being in Santa Clara County. Drawing upon CHC’s 30+ years of experience serving young people, ages 18-24, staff will assist to develop a program that effectively meets the needs of young people experiencing homelessness and human trafficking in Santa Clara County.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Community Involvement Coordinator (CIC) will be responsible for engaging the local community to connect with the mission of Covenant House (CHC) at all levels. The CIC will represent the agency in the public, to create awareness of the mission and goodwill with the community at-large.

The focus will be on engaging individuals, corporations, social groups, churches, etc. to support the mission through donations, volunteer activities, positive youth engagement and promotion of our work in the community.

The CIC will also be responsible for engaging, training, organizing and supervising the agency’s volunteer programs and youth workforce. This includes a mentorship program, corporate and individual volunteer activities, and the agency’s intern programs.

The CIC will work closely with both Program and Development staff to develop volunteer opportunities that benefit the youth and connect volunteers and donors to our mission. This includes cultivating new fundraising opportunities and creating maximum awareness of the mission of Covenant House California.

Classification: Full-Time 40 hours per week. non-exempt position

Salary Range: $28.00 per hour

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Support the ongoing efforts of the Santa Clara site, which will include beautification of the site itself, engagement of local corporations and neighbors to volunteer and support the site.
  2. Responsible for coordinating the day-to-day Volunteer Program activities for Covenant House California, which includes recruiting new volunteers, training, planning and organizing volunteer events to ensure appropriate volunteer engagement.
  3. Provides orientation session to new volunteers specific to CHC’s mission/ philosophy of care, their volunteer job duties, and program policies/procedures and identify individual training they may need to increase their knowledge and understanding of the youth served.
  4. Maintain the volunteer filing system to include applications, training information, etc.; maintain a database of organizations, corporations and other individuals to assure accurate coordination and information for all CHC program needs, using Raiser’s Edge.
  5. Develop, organize and recruit volunteers to run weekly workshops, activities that focus on wellness, the arts, gardening, sports, writing, acting, music, creative expression, financial literacy or any topic that will benefit our youth. Ensure there are flyers, calendars and announcements to maximize participation and engagement.
  6. Coordinates larger events and activities multiple times a year, including CHC’s annual community Thanksgiving Day dinner, Summer Barbeque and other Holiday activities.
  7. Responsible for the solicitation, processing, storage, and distribution of Gifts In-Kind. This is a huge opportunity to work with the program team to off-set budget costs, ensure youth have their needs met and the resources/supplies available to thrive.
  8. Work with the Development Team to cultivate new donors and corporate sponsors along with further coordination of current ones, who are engaged through the agency’s volunteer program and activities.
  9. Responsible for recruitment and screening of development, administrative and program interns and ensuring that their skills and experience match the position requirements.
  10. Works with special guests and honorees, outside vendors, donor committees as assigned.
  11. Communicate with volunteers regularly through email, e-newsletters and other available tools to ensure that they remain engaged with CHC, our mission and our youth.
  12. Outreach to local churches, and other religious organizations in support of the agency’s clients’ and programs.
  13. Represent CHC in various community forums with the purpose of creating increased awareness, communication and collaboration with other local community groups. This includes public speaking in groups of all sizes.
  14. Participate in our Social Media strategy for Covenant House California, which will increase the awareness of, and engagement with the community, in support of CHC’s mission in coordination with the Development team.
  15. Other duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree and/or equivalent experience required.

EXPERIENCE: Minimum of one to two years of related experience. Professional work experience as a volunteer coordinator or related experience is strongly preferred. Management, supervisory, coaching, and/or training experience is also preferred.

Development and Human Resources experience are both a plus.

SKILLS: Must have good organizational, verbal/written communication skills. Strong computer abilities/software abilities (proficient with Microsoft Office) Raiser’s Edge experience preferred. Must have excellent interpersonal skills and communication skills, including public speaking; must be a self-starter and team player with the ability to work with other staff members, clients, vendors and the public.

Must have a professional presentation and be detail oriented, well organized, have good problem solving skills and the ability to work effectively on multiple assignments at the same time.

TRANSPORTATION: Must have a valid California driver’s license and a good driving record.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Meal periods (non-paid) and breaks are required to be taken each shift. Any overtime must be pre-approved. This is a FT position working 40 hours a week. Some after-hours/weekend/holiday work is required as a condition of employment.

Must be willing to work flexible hours, days, evenings or weekends. General office with some required travel. Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs. on occasion, bend, sit and stand for prolonged periods of time.

EQUIPMENT USED: Must be able to utilize basic word processing, email, and internet programs. Must be able to communicate effective both orally and in written form.
