Mechanical Senior Engineer - Manassas
Overview:
As a Mechanical Senior Engineer working for Hepburn and Sons LLC, you will provide mechanical engineering leadership and oversight to the Technology Transition Division in support of technology development and derisking efforts. You will be expected to provide subject matter expertise on mechanical engineering design that will include guiding, approving, and performing analyses.The position of Mechanical Sr. Engineer is a combined technical lead with a partial project management role within Hepburn and Sons and has specific functional responsibility for overseeing the execution of Technology Transition Division projects.
The Mechanical Sr. Engineer is a critical leadership role responsible for overseeing mechanical focused technology development activities related to the design, testing, development and enhancement of technologies being derisked by Hepburn and Sons for integration into DoD and commercial systems.The position requires an individual with extensive engineering and management background with the ability to work autonomously.
This individual must be capable of leading a multidisciplinary team of engineers, technical specialists, and subcontractors to ensure quality engineering and reporting, drive technology innovation, and support the growth of the company in developing transition paths that provide value to our clients and stakeholders.
The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in mechanical engineering design, testing and evaluation, and exhibit a strong record of managing complex design and development projects from concept through to commercialization. While the division currently maintains a broad and diverse project portfolio, the commitment to grow and expand technologies and applications through ideation and proposal authoring is desired.
As part of managing complex projects, it is expected that in addition to deep engineering experience, the Mechanical Engineering Manager will have a sound working knowledge of government proposal and execution processes, various production/manufacturing concepts and processes, project financial management, and project management approaches

Responsibilities:
Project Execution and Management:
- Lead the design, development, and testing of mechanical systems and devices within the TTD division
- Monitor project progress, adjust plans as necessary, and provide regular updates to executive leadership and stakeholders
- Develop detailed project plans, timelines, and budgets, ensuring projects are delivered on-time and according to scope
Technology and Innovation Development:
- Identify novel technologies capable of solving warfighter and industry challenges
- Develop strategic plans for evaluating technology and potential business partners and transition paths
- Support bid and proposal efforts to convey value and importance of technology to stakeholders and end users
- Collaborate with internal teams to establish appropriate protections and IP positions for continued technology growth
- Cross-Functional Collaboration:
- Provide mechanical engineering technical support and expertise to Electrical Systems, Digital Engineering, and Materials Science groups and projects
- Collaborate with clients and external partners, including suppliers, research institutions, and regulatory bodies, to enhance technology transition success
- Deliver and explore mechanical engineering alternatives and concepts to division projects that enable innovative solutions and approaches to technical challenges
Business Development and Communication:
- Maintain effective communication across TTD groups and other Hepburn divisions to support clients and stakeholders
- Communicate regularly with clients, subcontractors, and suppliers to build and maintain Hepburn relationships
- Attend technical events, trade shows, and conferences as dictated by project and organizational direction
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, or a related field with direct Mechanical Engineering experience
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in Mechanical Engineering, with at least 5 years in a senior engineering or technology lead role
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance
- Proven expertise in materials science, mechanical engineering, and technology development
- Strong project management skills, with a demonstrated ability to lead complex, multidisciplinary projects
- Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills
- Experience with overcoming transition hurdles for technology adoption in the defense or private sector
- Up to 20% travel
Preferred:
- Professional engineering (PE) licensure
- Advanced degree (Master's or Ph.D.)
