A Certified Anesthesiologist Assistant (CAA), sometimes referred to as an Anesthesia Assistant, is a specially Anesthesia Assistant (AA)
is a specially trained, health professional who participates in the care of the stable surgical patient during general, regional, or
conscious sedation anesthesia through medical directives under the supervision of the anesthesiologist in which there is a signed

protocol.

Responsibilities:

Essential Functions
  • Obtain a comprehensive patient history and present the history to the supervising Medically directing anesthesiologist.
  • Pretest and calibrate anesthesia delivery systems and monitor, obtain, and interpret information from the systems and monitors.
  • Assist the supervising/Medically directing anesthesiologist with the implementation of medically accepted monitoring techniques.
  • Establish basic and advanced airway interventions, including intubation of the trachea and performing ventilatory support.
  • Administer intermittent vasoactive drugs and start and adjust vasoactive infusions.
  • Administer anesthetic drugs, adjuvant drugs, and accessory drugs
  • Assist the supervising/Medically directing anesthesiologist with the performance of epidural anesthetic procedures and spinal anesthetic procedure and assist in peripheral nerve blocks and catheters .
  • Administer legend drugs or controlled substances; intravenous drugs, fluids, or blood products; or inhalation or other anesthetic agents to patients which are ordered by the supervising anesthesiologist and administered while under the direct supervision of the supervising anesthesiologist.
  • Support life functions during anesthesia health care, including induction and intubation procedures, the use of appropriate mechanical supportive devices, and the management of fluid, electrolyte, and blood component balances.
  • Recognize and take appropriate corrective action for abnormal patient responses to anesthesia, adjunctive medication, or other forms of therapy.
  • Participate in management of the patient while in the post anesthesia recovery area, including the administration of any supporting fluids or drugs.
  • Assist the anesthesiologist in placing special peripheral and central venous and arterial lines for blood sampling and monitoring as appropriate.
  • Maintains legible, accurate and complete medical records for each anesthetic administered.
  • Assist in evaluating and managing pain catheters and following up on perioperative pain patients
  • Assist in evaluating and managing perioperative and post operative patients
  • Transfers responsibility for care of the patient to other qualified providers post operatively.
  • Ensures continuity of care and patient safety.
  • Adheres to patient and personnel safety procedures (infection control, fire, safety electrical and chemical hazards).
  • Demonstrates proficiency with maintenance of equipment and cleans work areas. Reports necessary equipment repairs and adjustments via proper channels.
  • Participates in interdisciplinary teams to enhanced patient safety and quality delivery of anesthesia care.
  • Participates in the quality assessment processes developed by Orlando Health and the Anesthesia Department of APMC.
  • Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state, and local standards.
  • Maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures

Qualifications:

Education/Training

Graduate of accredited Anesthesiologist Assistant Program

Licensure/Certification
  • Current license as an Anesthesiologist Assistant in the State of Florida
  • Current certification by the National Commission for Certification of Anesthesiologist Assistants (NCCAA)
  • Maintains BLS along with PALS or ACLS certification depending on area of employment.
