Job Description:

  • The Registered Nurse IV (RN) will be responsible for providing high-quality nursing care to pediatric patients in the Emergency Department. This position involves a variable schedule of three 12-hour shifts per week, with the expectation to flexibly adapt to changing shift requirements.

Responsibilities:

  • Deliver patient-centered, compassionate care in a fast-paced emergency environment, adhering to hospital and unit-specific protocols.
  • Perform triage, assessments, and treatment of pediatric patients presenting with a wide range of medical, surgical, and trauma-related emergencies.
  • Administer medications, treatments, and procedures as ordered by physicians and in accordance with hospital policies.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including physicians, nurse practitioners, and other medical professionals, to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
  • Utilize critical thinking to provide stabilization for patients in life-threatening conditions.
  • Provide emotional support to patients' families, offering clear communication about their child’s condition and care.
  • Participate in patient education and discharge planning to ensure a safe transition to home or other care settings.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records and documentation.
  • Deliver age-appropriate care, recognizing the physical and emotional needs of pediatric patients.
  • Ability to quickly assess and prioritize patient care based on the severity of the patient's condition.
  • Demonstrate competency in operating medical equipment, including IV pumps, monitors, and life-support devices.
  • Exhibit excellent verbal and written communication skills to interact effectively with patients, families, and healthcare teams.
  • Remain calm and effective under pressure, responding quickly and appropriately to emergencies.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program (Bachelor's degree preferred).

License/Certifications:

  • Current RN license in Virginia
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Advanced Pediatric Life Support (APLS)
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
  • Certification in Emergency Nursing (CEN)

Experience:

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of pediatric or emergency department nursing experience required.

Preferred Skills:

  • Strong ability to work in a high-pressure, emergency care setting.
  • Knowledge of pediatric developmental stages and the ability to adjust care based on age-appropriate needs.
  • Exceptional organizational and multitasking abilities.
  • Previous leadership experience in managing patient flow and mentoring less experienced nurses is a plus.
