Research Specialist

Together, UChicago Medicine and the Biological Sciences Division are working to address the world's most pressing medical challenges.

• The job performs routine assignments related to scientific research projects. Ensures compliance of research activities with institutional, state, and federal regulatory policies, procedures, directives and mandates.
• Analyses possible solutions using standard procedures.
• Writes articles, reports and manuscripts.
• Assists in drafting presentations on research findings.
• The Sanger Sequencing sub-unit of the Genomics Facility has existed for 20- plus years and offers services ranging from sequencing client-provided DNA templates to performing plasmid preps on client-provided colony plates and moving these DNA templates forward to sequencing.
• This position provides expert technical support and execution of the Sanger sequencing and plasmid preparation services.
• Additionally, this position will need to be able to perform other Core related services as needed.

• 80% Processing client-supplied samples via the Sanger sequencing data collection workflow (bench):
• Process sample intake documents, set up Sanger sequencing reactions, perform sequencing reaction cleanups.
• Operate ABl3730xl and related equipment.
• Proficient in colony picking, bacterial culture, and plasmid preparation.
• Work closely with other facility staff to ensure timely delivery of samples to Pis. (20%) Other Facility related functions as needed:
• Uses subject matter and best practices knowledge to perform lab-related duties and tasks.
• Rigorous record keeping of bench work and status of client's orders.
• Update clients on project progress as needed.
• Maintains technical and administrative support for a research project.
• Installs, sets up and performs experiments; interacting with students and other laboratory staff under the direction of the principal investigator.
• Performs other related work as needed.

Education:

• Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

• Bachelor's degree in Biology, Genetics, or related field.

Experience:

• Minimum of 1-year prior experience in a Core or Research lab setting.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills to communicate internally with co-workers and externally with Facility clients.
• Ability to work under pressure, manage competing deadlines and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
• Detail oriented with strong sense of work ownership.

• Ability to work at a computer for extended periods of time.
• Ability to perform lab-based tasks for an extended period of time.
