Plant Diagnostic Lab Intern
Overview:
Bartlett Tree Experts is a nationwide tree and shrub care company with a research and diagnostic lab located in Charlotte, North Carolina. In the Diagnostic Lab, woody ornamental pest, disease, and abiotic problem identification is the name of the game!
This is a full-time, 6-month (May – October) internship that supports all routine testing procedures and maintains essential laboratory functions. We are an energetic team that focuses on providing excellent diagnostic services to our clients.The ideal candidate is comfortable working under high pressure, performing repetitive tasks, and is eager to learn about plant diseases that impact trees and ornamental landscapes. Responsibilities:
- Open, sort, and troubleshoot daily mail delivery of samples
- Prepare and process roots for various disease screenings
- Prepare culture media
- Assist diagnosticians with culturing and plating
- Prepare and process samples for conventional PCR and ELISA testing
- Performs DNA extraction using manual extraction methods
- General laboratory: wash dishes, perform regular equipment maintenance, and manage autoclave trash
- Works closely with other lab technicians
- Regularly communicate with supervisor and diagnostic lab staff
- Participate in Bartlett Tree Research Laboratory outreach events and tours
- Attend scheduled intern learning experiences
- Optional: design and conduct an approved independent project
Qualifications:
- Completed or working towards a 2-4 year degree with a background in arboriculture, horticulture, plant science, botany, microbiology or related field
- Excels under pressure of a fast-paced, group working environment
- Excellent communication skills and attention to detail
- Comfortable performing repetitive tasks
- Experienced with basic computer skills and Microsoft Office Suite
- Experience working in any of the following: retail, food service, healthcare, or childcare
- Strong interest in plant pathology, entomology, arboriculture & ornamental plants
