The Real Estate Tax Compliance Manager ensures adherence to tax compliance processes and compliance with all applicable real estate tax regulations. This role includes managing the real estate tax database, the collection of the data, and handling tax filings, including tax exemption filings, in accordance with established procedures.
The Manager supports the preparation and submission of exemption documents, maintains accurate records, and ensures that the company complies with applicable tax exemption requirements. The role also involves responding to identified tax-saving opportunities and mitigating tax risks as they arise.

The Manager works closely with internal departments, external consultants, and regulatory agencies to help ensure that the company meets its real estate tax obligations accurately and on time.

This position will be located at Central Office- Indianapolis, IN.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain tax records, and prepares composite tax returns in compliance with federal, state, local, and tax laws.
  • Oversee the preparation, filing, and renewal of applicable real estate tax exemptions.
  • Support compliance with all real estate tax laws and regulations, staying updated on changes (e.g., deadlines, submission requirements) and assisting with necessary process updates.
  • Ensure that all real estate tax records and databases are accurately maintained and readily accessible for audits, internal reviews, and the upcoming Yardi implementation as needed.
  • Manages the delivery of tax advisory and planning services.
  • Collaborate with senior management to support and manage initiatives related to potential opportunities for additional exemptions or reliefs that maximize real estate tax exemptions and minimize tax liabilities as directed.
  • Assist in identifying real estate tax-saving opportunities and potential areas of risk, providing input and recommendations to optimize real estate tax positions.
  • Respond to real estate tax audits and inquiries from regulatory authorities, preparing necessary documentation, ensuring accurate and timely reporting, and facilitating a smooth audit process.
  • Liaise with external auditors and consultants to address any real estate tax-related issues.
  • Manages the research of issues and the drafting of tax opinions.
  • Assist in researching issues and contribute to drafting tax memoranda that support significant real estate tax and exemption positions for the organization.
  • Provide support for tax appeals by reviewing documentation, assessing the validity of claims, and providing advice on potential outcomes.
  • Manages activities related to staffing, including hiring, orienting, evaluating, disciplinary actions, and continuing education initiatives.
  • Support continuous improvement efforts by developing expertise in real estate exemption and valuation-related filings and related compliance.
  • Facilitate clear communication and alignment with best practices in real estate exemption management and relevant tax law changes.
  • Participates in researching issues and the drafting of tax opinions and memoranda supporting significant federal tax and exemption positions related to exempt organizations.
  • Collaborate with legal, finance and other departments to ensure all necessary information is prepared and submitted for appeals, without directly managing the appeals process.
  • Provide real estate tax-related support for special projects, mergers, acquisitions, and other business initiatives.
  • Mentor team members through more complex tax compliance tasks.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Associate’s degree in a law, taxation, accounting, finance or business-related field OR HS diploma and seven (7) years equivalent of applicable cumulative of education and experience- required.
  • Graduate degree in related field-preferred.

License/Certification:

  • Licensed Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Accountant (CA)- preferred.

Experience:

  • Two years’ experience managing real estate tax returns preparation, coordination and review- required.
  • Five years in corporate tax, business operations, or finance in the commercial or corporate real estate or related industry- preferred.
  • Three years’ leadership experience- preferred.
  • Experience leading in a matrix environment-preferred.

  • Advanced knowledge in MS Office products, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.
  • Travel Required: Up to 10% based on organization and department priorities.
