Department Overview:

Assists Radiation Safety Officer and Individual Responsible for Radiation Protection (IRRP) in all aspects of the Network Radiation Safety program. MaintainsNetwork-wide employee monitoring program, including collection and distribution of personal dosimeters, distribution of exposure records and annual notifications of doses.

Is responsible for ensuring that all radiation monitoring devices and instrumentation are kept calibrated and functioning properly. Also maintains records required by the radioactive materials license, machine generated device registrations and provides radiation safety education for staff and physicians as needed at the direction of the Radiation Safety Officer.

Responsibilities & Requirements:

  • Have a familiarity of regulatory standards and radiation safety related to community hospital standards and medical uses of radiation.
  • Maintain the Network dosimetry program, including:
  • Issuance and collection of all monitoring devices in a prompt manner.
  • Generating summary reports for the Radiation Safety Officer’s and/or Radiation Safety Committee’s review.
  • Requesting prior exposure histories for newly monitored personnel.
  • Providing monitoring information to other employers form previously monitored staff.
  • Issuance of monitoring reports to staff who request or are entitled to such reports.
  • Generating ALARA notices for issuance to affected staff at the Radiation Safety Officer’s direction.
  • Perform annual calibration of survey meters, permanently installed monitoring devices and personal electronic monitoring devices and maintain records of all calibration results.
  • As directed by the Radiation Safety Officer, assist in compliance audits of areas utilizing radioactive materials and machine generated radiation permitted by the license or registration.
  • Perform radiation safety surveys as directed by the Radiation Safety Officer and ensure appropriate documentation is maintained.
  • Perform ventilation testing for negative pressure and/or trap testing as required in areas utilizing radioactive gases.
  • Assist radiation oncology and nuclear medicine to ship and receive sealed sources and maintain documentation, including routine inventories and leak testing.
  • Perform routine quality control tests on radiation measurement instrumentation such as well counters, uptake probes and stationary monitoring devices. Assist in the proper disposal of radioactive wastes and maintain all required records of such disposal for regulatory compliance.
  • Proficient in the use of a personal computer using word processing, databases, and spreadsheet functions
  • Excellent communication skills and be able to be tactful and professional while working with staff, physicians, patients, and regulatory representatives.
  • Provide training to staff members on radiation safety as directed by the Radiation Safety Officer.
  • Ability to teach and provide instruction for various hospital staff
  • Ability to work with a variety of equipment and instruments commonly found in nuclear medicine, radiation therapy, and health physics areas.

Preferred Qualifications:

Requirements
  • Education: Minimum associates degree in the physical sciences, health physics, medical physics, radiation safety, nuclear medicine or radiation therapy.
  • Experience: Two years’ experience in health physics, radiation safety, nuclear medicine or radiation oncology using administrative skills required for organizing and maintaining a radiation safety compliance program.
  • Licensure, Certifications, Registrations: No certifications required, but licensure as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist or Radiation Protection Technologist is desirable.
